Come in number nine

What's the odds of us having our very own Super Kev by the end of the week? The rumour mill is in overdrive, with all the talk of Reading's number nine coming into Molineux.

Yep, the flaxen haired Irishman is rumoured to have been spotted at our lavish training ground, and some less-reputable websites have us activating a £6.5 million clause in his Royals contract.

But let's put a bit of context into all this...Denis Berkamp was rumoured to be looking at houses in Perton back in 2003, was he not?! I love that rumour, as it always brings a smile to people's faces!

Were he to sign, I would be delighted. It would send out a statement of intent and would really generate some fervour around the place.
Doyle's detractors would point to a lousy goal tally after Christmas, one that the much maligned Keogh matched in one single game at Pride Park.
But I would counter that by using the 'form is temporary' line. He looked class at Molineux back in September, held the ball up well, had a great turn of pace and was great in the air.
What's more, who else could we pick up at that price? Certainly not Darren Bent, who is another striker we are linked with.

And also, didn't Bully and Mutchy have the odd goal drought?! I remember them having one or two. Blimey, my hero Iwelumo went a few without a game!

Were we to buy him, I'd be looking at a couple of centre backs and a left back. Still not convinced about Elokobi there, Ward certainly shouldn't be there, and I maintain that Matty Hill is our best bet. He is a bit more conservative, less gung ho, and that might just be the order of the day come August.

So my thought for the next couple of days is: Our best bit of business and worst (from 89 - 2009)

Mine is pretty easy:
1. Steve Bull - £60 odd thousand from WBA - the rest is history
2. Michael Kightly - £25k from Grays - one of the best bargains ever
3. SEB - £1.5mill - 34 in 60 games (or something like that) - what price now?
4. Andy Thompson - came in the same package as Bully. A cult hero, and never missed a pen (apart from Stoke at home in a 0-0 draw)
5. Micky Stowell - £275,000 from Everton stiffs - great servant.

Worst:
Take your pick from:
Tony Daley, Geoff Thomas, Adie Williams, Robbie Slater, Mark Atkins, Mark Williams (remember the South African chap who was meant to be prolific?!), Sami Al Jaber, Darren Peacock, Paul Stancliffe, etc etc etc.

But my worst of all time:
Zelco Kalak now of AC Milan fame! Paid about £500k for the 'Spider' and he never kicked a ball for us!!!!!!

Speak again soon sports fans

Ben

  1. Morning all,

I like the food for thought today, but surley you have made som glaring omiisions from the best bit of bussiness.

Dean Richards, Robbie Keane & Joleon Lescott. Noe of them cost us a penny in transfer fees,Bully cult status aside, I would put them ahead of every one else on the list

Kevin Doyle...........while a very good player and a perfect fit for our team, it doesent make me fizz with excitment, but then none of our targets have.

  2. Can't believe you left Corica off that worst list! But on what list would you put Froggie?

  3. Morning chaps. I didn't put Robbie and JLo as they were the products of our youth system. Otherwise, yes, definitely (maybe I should have written 'best signing'). Deano? Hmm...Before injury (after White Hart Lane cup game when he owned Sheringham) I would have put him as a better centre back than Lescott now. That good. Afterwards, a shadow of his former self (eg, Stoke City 1-4 at home, Adebola screwing him v Blues) But for that injury, who knows. And we took a £2mill hit on him.
Morning Vijay!! Good to have you on board. I actually liked Corica, (the only Aussie with a soft attitude!) but yep, 'the next Kinkladse' was pretty lightweight. Froggie was too good for the bad list. Felt sorry for GT. Had him and Daley had stayed fit, I reckon he'd have got us up.

  4. Robert Taylor and Frankowski (the final piece of Glen Hoddle's jigsaw) have got to be 2 of our worst ever signings. I don't think either of them scored for us.

I disagree with your lack of trust in Big George, he was great at the start of last season and i reckon he's going to be a legend by the end of next year.

  5. Still love that Berkamp rumour too!!

Think Doyle would be a great signing for us. Think he and SEB would be a really strong partnership. Not unlike the Bully and Mutchy of old. He's scored goals at this level and he doesn't seem to be a big time charlie who is going to come in and disrupt the balance we have in the dressing room.

Bully has to be top of the pile. He alone got us out of the lower divisions back in the dark days - there is a reason why he's earnt that cult status!!

  6. I was gonna say robert taylor he did score agaisnst grimsby in the cup though, lol. How about silas he didn't set the place on fire, steve sedgley was poor and also a world class cock.
Kevin foley is on my list for the best bit of money we've spent in a long time.

  8. Can I change my mind? I would like to replace Kalak with Frankowski or Taylor!! Good shouts. Those Brazilians sounded well exciting, but never materialised. I also add Jens Dowe and Jesus Sanjuan to the mix. Darren Ferguson was pretty minging as well.
